7/01/20 - I’ve been having a look at the briefs online and there’s a Lego one!! It seems a bit complicated but if I manage to do a great project about it I would be a nice addition to my portfolio! But let’s not get too excited, it might not even be chosen by the class, so we’ll see.
14/01/20 - Today we chose the briefs for the class. Even if I thought at first I wanted to Lego brief to be chosen, I’m actually very happy that it wasn’t picked and that I’ll be able to do the VBat one! I really like branding and I feel like I didn’t have that much to show in my portfolio so this will be a great opportunity. I’m thinking of basing my project on my home town - Toulouse, in the south of France.
WORKSHOP NOTES
Tips: 1) Read the briefs, 2) Do your research, 3) Simple and disruptive ideas, 4) Use tech well, 5) Craft it
Who? Tourists and locals
What? Brand a bike hire - Stand/ Wrap - Name/Logo - Wayfinding
Why? Link the bike to the city, make it less boring.
RESEARCH/INSIGHT - Present both. Analyse the Research
5C - Consumer - Category - Competitors - Channels - Company
Consumers: Locals and tourists aren’t going to the same place. “Dumb it down” and make it simple to understand for tourists.
Category - Travel, Health, Exercise, Environment, Tourism. Bikes aren’t at the top of each of those categories but they belong to all of them. How do you make them go up to the top?
Competitors - Bus tourist tours, Take some of the qualities and integrate them into your product.
Channel - Tourist office - Social
Company (not applicable here)
15/01/20 - Let’s talk about what’s actually available already in Toulouse : “VélÔ Toulouse”. The current bike hire scheme is dark, sad and honestly a little boring. I think it’s a shame to live in a city nicknamed the “Pink City” and not take more advantage of that. Especially with public bikes it’s a great way to add some fun and colours.
I found this super fun colour palette that I think would work perfectly for this project.
So I’ve thought of a new name for the bike hire : Allez Hop! In French it means something like “Alright, let’s go!”, and it’s an expression everyone uses. But as I’m thinking of rebranding the current bike hire scheme of the city (VélÔ Toulouse), I don’t know if I should use the original name, that is more on brief because it refers to the city, or use the new name… I feel like the logo could be made more “handwritten” and modern. I’ve found this font and I think it’s looking better already!
16/01/20 - First presentation to the tutors went well, they liked the colour palette, the general idea and the logo. As suggested I will try to handwrite it myself and not use a font to make it more personal and specific to the brand.
NOTES -
Amazing branding - Fun bike wraps, checkout bike history.
Can the bike be a tourism accessory? Think broad - Take Photos? How do you use tech to play and add it? Collaborate with other brands? Think of the potential of the brand. What whole service can you imagine?
Mapping - Sync live events? Discounts?
Design of the bike? How do you get it out there? How do people know about it? Checkout “all trails” app. How do you make it fit for different age categories? Bikes for kids? Baby seats.
23/01/20 - What came out of my research/ Survey?
Toulouse is a young city, lots of universities. Students are on a budget, and getting a bargain would attract them. Reward system for the locals if they meet up with tourists to show them around? Add campaign? Online so it’s cheap - Insist on the price aspect and appeal to locals.
Illustrated maps to pick up with routes to visit the city. Something nice and illustrated maybe like that?
Maybe on the app - Two different possibilities when you log in you say if you’re a tourist or a local - takes you to a different menu.
13/02/20 - Feedback - Use the pencil tool to smooth out the logo, but it’s really good! Explain the concept first before showing the brand - present your insight and make statements like “wouldn’t it be great… ? “ Self Experience. Add some photographs. Add in some context. Make it less 2D.
20/02/20 - instand Crit review - I’m happy the tutors were very happy with my work! They thought it was good branding, well done. I have to make the first slide better but I’m honestly very happy I’m basically done with this project! Will post the full finished work on the website.
1/06/20 - FINAL THOUGHTS
I really enjoyed working on this project! I didn’t think I would have picked that brief at first but I’m really glad I did. It inspired me and made me work more on branding which I think will be great for my portfolio. I think I did a good job, and I learned a lot while working on this. Ideally the next steps now would be to present it in French so that I could possibly send it to the communication office in Toulouse! One of my parent’s friend has a direct link to the head of communication so it would be really great to be able to present her my work. And who knows maybe they’d like to use it!
